Slovak Fashion Takes the Spotlight in Budapest: SFC Collective Show at BCEFW 2024
This summer, Budapest once again became the fashion capital of Central Europe, hosting the 14th Budapest Central European Fashion Week (BCEFW) from August 26 to September 1, 2024. Organized by the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency (HFDA), the event brings together top fashion talent from across the region.
This season, the Slovak Fashion Council (SFC) returned to BCEFW, featuring collections from past contestants of the Best Fashion Talent award, co-hosted with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Live! Designers Mata Durikovic, Juliana Brnakova, and Jakub Matiasovic showcased their latest collections, bringing Slovak fashion to an international stage.
“The participation of Slovak designers at BCEFW is a major milestone for the Slovak Fashion Council, allowing us to present Slovak fashion in an international context. The SFC Collective Show gives talented designers a platform to share their unique visions and collections with a global audience, which is essential for growing their careers in Central Europe,” said SFC Director Zuzana Bobikova.
Mata Durikovic, winner of the 2022 Best Fashion Talent and the 2023 National Design Award, presented her Pink Matrix 25 collection under her brand MADBYMAD. This collection, a continuation of her Pink Matrix 23/24line, offers a stunning take on a floral crystal galaxy while championing sustainable luxury. Each piece is designed to be disassembled and easily recycled. Durikovic draws inspiration from childhood memories, especially her grandmother’s sustainable household practices, like using starch water from potatoes to nourish plants. This starch-based material has become the foundation for her bioplastic experiments, which shape her creations at MADBYMAD.
Juliana Brnakova showcased a collection that celebrates slow fashion, highlighting the joy of craftsmanship and honoring simplicity. Inspired by nature’s textures and colors, her collection invites reflection and a slower pace in a fast-moving world. Through her work, Juliana communicates the beauty of precision and the value of simplicity.
Jakub Matiasovic brought his Adolescence collection, reflecting the stages of growth—childhood, puberty, and young adulthood. The collection is a personal expression of his memories of these transformative times. Known for his bold color choices and striking lines, Matiasovic draws on his studies of brutalist architecture in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and the UK. Collaborating with Textile Studio JS’s Juraj Straka, Jakub delivers a collection full of emotional and visual contrasts, blending ruggedness with elegance.
Budapest Central European Fashion Week goes beyond the runway, offering events that immerse visitors in the world of fashion. “For SFC, participating in this event signals to the region that Slovak fashion—with its sustainable focus—deserves a place on the international stage. Our designers’ work can inspire the fashion industry toward greener practices. The SFC’s international activities strengthen competitiveness, build valuable connections, open up new opportunities, and increase awareness of Slovak fashion,” added Zuzana Bobikova.
